Pressure gauges are measuring devices which are very common in process and production industries. Similar to any other instrument, a pressure gauge is also required to be calibrated at regular intervals. When you start the calibration process of a pressure gauge, there are 5 things you need to consider:

1. Make Sure That You Know About The Accuracy Classes

You’ll be needed to know the accuracy classes of the pressure gauges before attempting to calibrate them. Accuracy classes ASME B40.100 refers to an accuracy range of

0.1%-5% and EN 837 refers to 0.1%-4% accuracy range.

By knowing about the accuracy classes, you will know the acceptance level of the pressure gauge and that will help you to start the calibration process securely.

2. Prevent Contamination From Happening Beforehand

The pressure media used by the pressure gauges should be thoroughly checked. No harmful media should be used which can damage the gauge when it gets installed back in the system. Take notes of contaminated dirt which can get into the calibration device and may damage the entire process. Calibration of scientific machines is a sensitive process and should be done with utmost preventions.

3. Make Sure That The Pipe Doesn’t Leak

If the pressure gauge pipe leaks, the calibration efforts will go in vain as the pressure couldn’t be adjusted in the different phases of the calibration. There can be unpredictable numbers of errors happening because of pipe leaks. The change in pressure will cause the readings to fluctuate more than ever.

A pipe leak can be traced by a series of tests but the most common is the leak test. It is done by making the system go through immense pressure. After this, the system is left to relax while spotting the leak, if there is any.

4. Take Care of The Force Exerted By The Torque

Pressure gauges which are torque sensitive are usually damaged due to unaware worker connecting pressure pipes to the gauge without taking the torque force into consideration.

Always make sure that you go with the manufacturer’s advised readings and always educate the workers about the torque force. This way, you will largely contribute to the wellbeing of your lab machinery. They need regular calibration and by keeping them fit and running, you have made a great contribution to the company’s repair costs.

5. The Safety Measures Should Be of Top Notch

Calibrating a pressure gauge can be dangerous if adequate safety measures are not taken into consideration. The pressure valve should be properly locked before the green signal is given. A safety in charge should inspect the area thoroughly and make the notes of risky or probable risky things in and around the pressure gauge. The risk management should be done in order to avoid any kind of mishap.

Once everything is cleared, calibration process should be initiated. Still, proper lab gears are needed compulsorily for everyone who is present near the gauge.
