Excuses, Excuses
First and foremost, let me say I that I am so relieved that I am not the only messy sewist out there. You guys made me feel a whole bit better about myself. Not that I was feeling to guilty. In fact, all your comments yesterday started me thinking about the perfect sewing space. But more on that in another post.
So, umm… Yeah, I didn’t finish the SSS yesterday. Yes, yesterday was my mom’s birthday. Yes, I didn’t have any gift to give her. But I have a good excuse. Several actually. Honest!
First, just as I was sitting down in front of my machine, Mom asked if I wanted to see a movie with her. How could I refuse? It was the woman’s birthday after all. Right? We saw Side Effects. It was awesome! Go see it.
Then, I had to make her a cake. Had to. It was delicious! Claudine gave me her super secret recipe. And I found a great chocolate buttercream frosting recipe on-line.
And then we went out to dinner to celebrate Mom’s bday. We had a Margaux that was to die for…
And Jack wore his brand new Thumb & Pinky shirt made by my friend Jane, a talented sewist/mosaicist. She has an Etsy shop with the cutest kids clothes. If you are ever in a bind for a present and don’t have time to whip up something yourself, consider buying from Jane! Her work is beautiful and she uses amazing fabrics. In fact, Jack picked out the fabric for his shirt himself from Jane’s stash. How cute is that?
Today, I made some progress on the SSS, but folks, this SSS has lots and lots of steps. It is a Vogue pattern after all. I am only half way through all the steps.
But then I had to stop working on the SSS to prepare a delicious dinner, my friend Michael’s (Michael of Stave 28 fame), bolognese sauce. This sauce takes about 4.5 hours to prepare. I have been standing at my stove top for 2.5 hours already. It needs to simmer about 2 more hours before its perfection is realized.
But tonight and tomorrow I have large chunks of time to devote to the SSS. So hopefully the excuses stop here.
I can’t wait to show it to my mom and to you all! I hope it’s worth the wait. ;)
Oh wait, before I sign off here, I wanted to show you my now framed and hung painting by fellow sewist and friend, Kathy of Spottedroo. Doesn’t it look handsome? I love that I will sit under it reading books and watching TV. What a cozy spot that corner is now. Thank you so much Kathy for this gorgeous piece.
Happy sewing everyone!

Oh, how nice to see the painting up in your place! I hope you enjoy it!
I love it Kathy! It’s such a beautiful reminder of Fall. We don’t get much of a fall here in San Diego, what with all the palm trees here.
Happy Birthday to your Mom! The Little Boy who lives with you is becoming a Little Man. He is growing like a weed and it seems that Cali agrees with him. Looking forward to the reveal of the SSS!
I think these are all very good excuses! And I’m sure your mother can forgive you
By the way, that sauce-in-the-making looks great but quite unlike any bolognese I’ve ever cooked/eaten.
Thanks Lauriana!
By the way, that was the beginning of the sauce where you cook down 2.5 cups of milk into the sauteed vegetables. Then comes the 2.5 cups of wine. Then the 2 lbs of beef. And the very last thing you add is the tomatoes. It takes a long time to cook down that volume of liquid without curdling the milk. But the milk is the secret to the sauce. You wouldn’t suspect it was there when you’re eating it at the table!
