Fabric as therapy?

2012 April 18

If you’re feeling a little blue, what do you do?  Why buy some fabric of course.  It perks you up every time.  How do I know?  Well, it worked for me today.

Did you hear that Meg has a new job, a dream job?  She’s started working at Mood Fabrics and loves it.  She’s writing their blog now and today’s post hit just the right note.  Carolyn and I met up with Meg at Mood today to do a little fabric therapy.  It was great to see how happy Meg is, to meet some of the staff and, of course, fondle some fabric.  Oh, and did you know you can get a Moods Reward card????  I just got mine today.  Spend $500 and get $25 off the next purchase.  I am little scared how fast that $25 might show up.

I came away with these goodies:  some kelly green thread for my Rachel Comey skirt, and a gorgeous striped knit for a maxi dress (pattern as yet undecided).

Then I stopped by SIL Thread with Carolyn to get some kelly green topstitching thread and a kelly green invisible zipper (again, for the Rachel Comey skirt).

In other sewing news, I am working on a wrap dress muslin right now, Butterick 5454.  My muslin fabric is a solid forest green jersey, but if I like the dress made up, I plan to make it in a gorgeous border print knit that I bought (I think) from Fabricmart last year (again, I think).   Sorry, I don’t have a pic of the fabric, but trust me, it’s gorgeous.

This weekend, Jack and I leave for San Diego to visit my parents.  I really need a vacation.  Really.  I plan to bring two projects to work on while I’m there.  Since my mom sews, she has all the supplies I would need.  Well except for a serger.   Hmmm…  Might have to plan this very carefully.  Might need to cut the pattern pieces and serge seam allowances before I go.  Well, we’ll see.  I will also be visiting LA for a day.  I plan to meet up with some fellow sewing  bloggers and, of course, fabric shop.  Oh goodie, more fabric therapy!  So plan on SEWN San Diego edition posts for next week.

So, tell me, do you use fabric as therapy?  Does it work for you?  😉

When I visited San Diego I went to the National City Swap Meet and made a huge fabric haul! Jobbers from the LA clothing district unload all their extra fabric at this swap meet and all the fabric stores in Tiajuana send buyers. The prices are mostly $1 a yard !!!!. Some $2. That was the case when I visited three years ago. I am still working through all the stash I bought then. My non-sewing friend was stunned to see me shop like a great white shark after a scuba diver. 🙂

I absolutely do fabric therapy! All the time. In fact, I’m still in fabric therapy. 🙂 hehehe. I just wish that I can sew as fast though…

Have fun in SoCal! Yardage Town is my favorite SD fabric store (National City one is the best, but I have been to the Clairemont Mesa location more often), and the LA garment district (and the Loft especially – $2.50/pound of fabric) are awesome! Never had a chance to go to the swap meet, but I have heard good things…

And, yeah, I totally use fabric as therapy. Maybe a bit too much. Well, maybe not fabric specifically, but the combination of fabric, patterns, and sewing in general. I noticed the stash started growing quite a bit when I went through a rough emotional patch a few years ago, and when I feel sad going to the fabric store always perks me up. So I totally get the whole fabric therapy thing.

Gwen Couture in La Jolla has truly beautiful fabrics. Small selection, but really nice.

To answer your question in a nutshell, yes and yes! Might be time for some more therapy soon, although my fabric cupboards are telling me otherwise! Have a great vacation, maybe this is a good chance to get lots of tracing done if you’re unsure about the serger situation.

Yes fabric therapy works for me ALL the time. Sometimes I just need to feel the fabric and walk around the store. Sad I know but it helps 🙂

Have a great time visiting your parents in San Diego, and your day in LA.

Oh yes… I indulge in a little fabric therapy to cheer myself up. And I’ve been known to do it to console myself when I’m too busy to sew! Can’t say that’s working out so well for my goals of sewing down my stash…

Fabric is the BEST form of therapy. Even when I can’t sew I’m still collecting gorgeous pieces for my stash 🙂 Also patterns! Hehe

I’ve made that wrap dress by the way, love it!
Also made it in a plain black but it looks much better in a print 🙂

NO SEWING on vacation! (Fabric shopping is allowed of course).

Have a great trip and thanks for the post. I love the Butterick pattern and hearing about Meg’s news.

Ooh, I have 2 sergers in my LA area sewing room! When and where is the LA meetup? Can I join you?

oh yeah, baby. I was just gazing at my stash yesterday (it’s all on a big shelving unit) and I thought, “why that doesn’t take much space at all! why would anyone even want to have less than that?”

And, another anecdote … and a couple weeks ago, I was feeling a little *meh* so I hopped on a train to NYC, shopped for 2 hours at Mood and Elliott Berman, got back on the train and made it home at my normal 7pm.
My goodness that trip lifted my spirits and I have sewn almost every piece of fabric I bought that day!

I am new to your blog but LOVE it. So much inspiration. Such a coincidence because I stopped on my way home at Joanne’s to de-stress from a crazy busy work day. Used my 50% to buy a book on fabric flowers which I want to do more of. I am back into sewing after many years of letting it go and having so much fun. Why did I stop!?! Maybe a dumb question but what is top stitching thread? I just picked up top stitching needles today after reading about them but didn’t know about the thread. Have a good time in SD! The swap meet sounds great. If you go, I’m sure you will write about it. I don’t live too far away and would love to know if it is still living up to BeckyMc’s memories.
