I got nuthin’

We had a long weekend here in the States.  Ordinarily that should mean lots of sewing time for most enthusiasts, but not for me.  First, I didn’t have the energy, intellectual or physical, to work up a new muslin and all the requisite fitting tweaks.  And second, because I was forced to deal with many, many boxes from my past.

Eight years ago, I moved to NYC and found out first hand how small the apartments are here and how little storage is available to a renter.  In Chicago, not only are apartments large, with many closets, they also usually come with storage space in the basement of the building.  Needless to say, I kept a lot of stuff.

I thought I had rid myself of all but the essentials before moving out here to the Big Apple.  I was sorely mistaken.  My friend Rachael volunteered her attic in New Jersey for my storage needs.  I took her up on her generous offer and carted all my memorabilia, old financial records, etc. to New Jersey.  And then promptly forgot about it all.

Fast forward eight years later to this past weekend and I find out that Rachael is selling her home and I need to deal with all my crap stuff.  I have been shredding ever since.

I did find some great pictures though!  Like this one of my first prom (please excuse me blacking out my date’s face)…

Haha!  Ah to be 13 again and rethink that dress choice.  What was I thinking?????  It looks like a Victorian wedding gown.  Yuck!

I am itching to get back to sewing.  I want to work on a blouse TNT and start using the tricky fabrics in my stash like silks and chiffons.  Am I nuts?  Probably.  But you already knew that.

Haha! My Dad took the opportunity this past Christmas to drop off all the boxes of my stuff I left in his basement when we moved cities three and a half years ago. Fun! Though there’s still one box of china I swear we haven’t found.

Cracking dress 🙂 How I wish we had the prom thing over here so I could unearth similar treasures!

That dress is… special. 😀 I think we all have those skeletons in our closets or friend’s attics.

I got next to nil sewing this weekend too but I was at least able to iron and cut.

Remember the Vera Wang brocade we all got for $3/yd? Saw it at Mood for $40/yd.

I can totally empathize! Living in NYC, my “sewing space” consists of the bottom 2 drawers of my linen closet, my living/dining room turned sewing room, and my window sill. I don’t have much of a stash to speak of since I don’t have the space for one — I don’t buy fabrics unless they are earmarked for a pattern.

I’ve been spending more time reading about sewing and buying patterns and fabric for sewing, instead of actually sewing. It happens to us all. lol
