We are having a great holiday season here at Chez SEWN. There’s been lots of cooking and lots of sewing. And there will be more sewing because this happened…
How awesome is that little sewing machine? My sister told me that my niece Katie had taken a sewing class this past fall. Well you can imagine my excitement at that news. Then a woman in my draping class brought in her new Janome Sew Mini machine and I knew I had the perfect Christmas gift for Katie.
Yesterday we spent the day sewing together. She made her very first skirt. I had some lovely floral fine wale corduroy in my stash that had been bought expressly for her in NYC. We drafted an a line skirt based on her measurements and started her custom skirt. She was so excited.
I taught her how to measure, how to cut, how to operate the machines, how to press… Look how proud she is to wear her new skirt on Christmas day.
I think we may have drafted the skirt a little on the tight side, but she insists “it’s perfect!” So cute. Tomorrow we are making a matching purse on her new machine. Can’t wait to take it out of the box and show her how to use it. I hope she really gets into sewing. It would be so fun if she did.
While we were finishing up her skirt, she started playing with a scrap of the fabric I used to make her mother a birthday top. She folded it this way and that. She fiddled with it and came up with an idea to make a matching little purse for her mother.
It was her idea to use the selvedge for the for the flap and to add a button as the closure. I had her pick a button from my stash. I fashioned some elastic to close over the button.
And the top I made for my sister? It was an unintentional gift for her. I originally made it for myself, but it was too small for me. Good for my sister though. I took it in at the side seams a bit from the hem and tapering up to just under the arm seam. It was a little too voluminous. I will do a full on review of the pattern (Kwik Sew 3802) after the new year. Right now I have my family visiting. I also made it for my best friend Cayce who needed the same change as my sister.
Doesn’t it look cute on her?
Oh, and the Jammiepalooza of 2013? It was hit. The kids loved them. The fabrics were so soft and thick. Perfect.
Here are the kids wearing them this morning as they opened their presents. Pretty hard to get good pictures of them in the hullabaloo.
I can’t resist posting the last elf sighting at our house. My niece and nephew’s elf found our house on Christmas Eve, so the elves played a game of chess that night apparently. Jack’s elf was winning when we found them in the morning. Team Elfie!
Well, I hope you had a good Christmas if you celebrate it and I wish you all a happy new year!
